In the 18th century, in Parma, Italia, there was fine printer and typographer named Giambattista Bodoni -- his work was called by many of his time and since, as the exemplar of sophistication in design. Beautiful books, exquisite typefaces, amazing sense of airiness and restraint. The type of our masthead is custom designed and hand-drawn by Tim Girvin and his team in NYC | Seattle, creating a perfection on the classics from centuries past, to a new revised and refined titling treatment -- just for us!   Sniffapalooza Magazine Banner by Tim GirvinSniffapalooza logo/banner: Bond No. 9 is a registered trademark of Laurice & Co. ©2008

A Sniffapalooza Magazine Exclusive
Burning Down The House Series
The Influencers Speak

Sniffapalooza Magazine and Michelyn Camen interviews Jean Claude Ellena; In-House Perfumer of the House of Hermès, Michel Roudnitska, Mandy Aftel, Kilian Hennessy, Chandler Burr Perfume Critic for the New York Times, George Wuchsa-The Global E-tailer of First-In-Fragrance, Ron Robinson of Apothia, Andy Tauer, Yosh Han, Franco Wright and Adam Eastwood of LuckyScent, Vero Kern and Sarah Horowitz-Thran.   The ‘Power’ Influencers of Niche---men and women whose names are the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of the revolution. Serge Lutens, Frederic Malle, Thierry Wasser, Bertrand Duchaufour, Laurice Rahmé, Neil Morris, Karen Dubin and Karen Adams of Sniffapalooza.   Part Five features Christopher Brosius of CB.I Hate Perfume, Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne Fragrances, Christophe Laudamiel and Christoph Hornetz ‘Les Christophs’, Nobi Shioyo of  S Perfumes, Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner; Co-Owners of Aedes de Venustas Boutique, Alessandro Gualtieri of Nasomatto and Marie-Helene Rogeon ‘La Reine de le Rose’ of Les Parfums de Rosine Fragrances

Niche fragrance at its best is cutting edge, thought provoking and controversial. These are our anti-heroes and heroines of scent. Some are outspoken, some stay hidden in the shadows.  All are unique.  Why did the sales of niche fragrances double within the last year and a half, while the commercial fragrance industry is losing ground?  With nearly a thousand new launches  a year, millions spent in advertising, flanker after flanker, what is happening to our fragrant world? I posed this question to a group of industry ‘influencers’ (les nez, the retailers, the niche and artisnal perfumers, the critics, the bloggers, and the owners of fine fragrance companies), who are leaving their thumbprints, as unique as their words, on the match that is burning down ‘the house of mediocrity’.

In this extraordinary edition of “Burning Down the House”, an unprecedented panel of fragrance game-changers and some of the greatest innovators in the Fragrance industry share their personal perspectives and thought-provoking answers to the question: “What are your feelings about the state of contemporary fragrance and how do you think the industry must evolve in order to stay relevant to an oversaturated market?”

Their words are uncut, unplugged, unedited.  View full series of Burning Down The House...

In a series written exclusively for Sniffapalooza Magazine, prepare yourself for a multi sensory olfactive journey, where fragrances embrace the worlds of fiction, fine art, film, music and dance.

Tales, myths, and larger than life characters thrive in the world of perfumery and this is what makes perfumery mysterious, multifaceted, intriguing, magical, and forever wavering between fact and fiction. In Volume 1, Book 1i. we meet the niche ‘feminines’ who had most profound effects on  us from both a literary and olfactive perspective.  In Volume 1, Book ii we meet a Cop and three Queens, a pampered socialite and a woman of ill repute, and an aging beauty and a Goddess. These fictional and/or iconic women span centuries and continents, blurring the lines between truth and fiction and time --- from the 10th century BC to the Year 2058. These are their fragrances; the scents that would bring them to life and live forever in the realm of our imagination.  Part 3 features Men in fiction – flawed as all men (and women) are, but men who dare to dream, to rule or to experience. Whether they are vilified or placed high atop a pedestal, here are five iconic men who 'lived' in a world long before our own time. These men will always resonate with us and are brought to life here through fragrance. View Fragrance & The Arts

Exclusive rare interview with Michael Edwards
Fragrance Expert and Author of "Fragrances Of The World"

By Mark David Boberick
In 1984, Michael Edwards changed the Perfume Industry when he launched Fragrances of the World, a guide that classified perfumes. Updated yearly, it would grow to be a vital resource for perfume retailers the world over. Today, Edwards’ body of work includes the “Fragrance Bible” which is in its 26th edition and lists over 7000 fragrances as well as the Fragrance Database which lists just about every detail one could want to know about a fragrance. Edwards is the author of both Fragrances of the World and Perfume Legends: French Feminine Fragrances, the cult book and collectors item that opened up the secret world of perfume.  According to the Fragrance Foundation, Michael Edwards has become the "perfume experts' expert." He was recognized by two FiFi awards for his contributions to the fragrance industry and his annual Fragrances of the World guidebook and his Fragrances of the World.Info database are considered the world's most comprehensive references for professionals, retailers and fragrance lovers alike.

It was a great honor to spend the day with Michael Edwards, to interview him and finally, to present to you; through Sniffapalooza Magazine, this rare interview. You can also view his Fragrance Wheel inside.  Raphaella Barkley; Editor of Sniffapalooza Magazine (see Editors Note inside) and I sat down with Michael in New York City several months ago for the following interview...full interview inside.        -Mark David Boberick

"In extracting the oils, the angels take their share."

-Michael Edwards

"My first recollection of meeting Fragrance Author/Expert, Michael Edwards will forever be etched in my memory like a beautiful Lanvin stopper. The year was 1998 and we went to a luncheon in some lovely cafe in Cannes, France during the World Tax Free Show. I recall a tall tanned and elegant Gentleman in an off-white linen suit striding towards me.  As we began our journey on scents, his lilting and gentle English accent effortlessly glided across scent names and history like an Olympic skater, his pirouettes: precious nuggets of fascinating information that only a select few would know.  It was magic and anyone who is fortunate to hear him will also be enraptured. Michael Edwards' Award-winning contributions and knowledge of perfumes are limitless. As an author, his language and phenomenal attention to detail is breathtaking.  His classifications, spellbinding to those who seek out the truth with facts and integrity. His passion and authoritative joie de vivre, utterly infectious.

A living legend, Michael Edwards is without question, the most recognizable and highly accredited Fragrance Expert to date.  His story is remarkable and his knowledge?  Well, see for yourself in the following interview..."

View Part Four Raphaella's Roses here...over 110 rose fragrances...

The long awaited Part Four is finally here! Part Four Raphaella’s Roses below features over 110 old and new scents.  While most are “straight up” rose scents, others have enough rose in them to add to the list.  Surprisingly, during my research, I learned that both a “perfume scientist” and a “fragrance expert” classified certain fragrances as “rose” scents. There were many roses that I did not include because they were either discontinued or too hard to find to purchase. I do hope you enjoy Part Four of Raphaella's Roses, a huge collection of rose fragrances...

Odin New York Launches Fourth Fragrance

Odin New York launches its fourth signature scent with 04 Petrana. Its debut set of three unisex fragrances: 01 Nomad, 02 Owari, and 03 Century evoke the exoticism of travel and a modern approach to time-honored fragrance traditions. In their fourth scent, 04 Petrana the rich layering of influences and attention to scent composition comes alive. CREED Aventus
New Fragrance

"This mesmerizing mix of bergamot,
apple and pineapple perched on
wood and oakmoss..."

- By S.S. FAIR The New York Times T Magazine
on CREED Aventus

Olivier CREED, sixth-generation master perfumer of France,
presents Aventus, a new fragrance for men
that honors power, strength and vision, inspired by Napoleon,
the man who crowned himself emperor of France and all Europe,
a self-made king who waged war, peace and love on terms
he set.  CREED Aventus gets its name from an ancient
word meaning “success”.  The New York Times described
Aventus as “mesmerizing” and “evanescent” in its review.
Aventus debuts in America before all other countries,
a CREED rarity.  Part of proceeds from U.S. sales of
Aventus will benefit American Rivers, protecting U.S.
waterways from harm.  This choice was made as
Aventus includes birch of Louisiana, an area Napoleon ruled,
but today a focus of environmental concern.

Top Note: Blackcurrant from sunny Corsica, where Napoleon was born.  Bergamot from Italy, site of victories that made him famous.  Calville Blanc apples of France, where he rose to be emperor.  Royal pineapple, Napoleon’s favorite palace dessert. Middle Note: Napoleon Roses.  Louisana birch, the wood of his throne.  Jasmine from Egypt, where his empire reached.  Exotic patchouli, valued for scent -– and health. Base Note: Oak moss from Spain, which Napoleon conquered.  Ambergris from the seas, to show the strength of his navy.  Gourmand vanilla in the French style signals the touch of high living Napoleon enjoyed.

Aventus is now available at Neiman Marcus and www.creedboutique.com

In other CREED news: CREED launched its first shipment of CREED products to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan.  Throughout the war in Iraq, CREED sent supreme-quality soaps, hair-and-body washes and other items, including CREED's durable leather shaving kits, to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.  The messages of support -- and medals (see http://www.icperfumes.com/awards.php) -- we received in return from U.S. soldiers stationed in places such as Tikrit, hometown of Saddam Hussein, were a tremendous reward.

The #1 selling fragrance brand at Neiman Marcus stores for the fiscal year Neiman Marcus ended July 31 and CREED was also the #1 selling fragrance brand at the Bergdorf Goodman men's store -- and the #2 selling fragrance brand at the Bergdorf Goodman women's store -- for the 12 months ending July 31, 2010.  Indeed, that period was CREED's biggest ever at the Bergdorf Goodman stores. Additionally, CREED has reached the #1 spot at Harrod's in London.

CREED PRESENTS SPICE AND WOOD

Olivier CREED, sixth generation master perfumer of France, presents a new fragrance for men and women, Spice and Wood, an homage to the romance of Antony and Cleopatra.  It is the second in the Royal Exclusives collection that celebrate CREED’s 250th anniversary in 2010. Spice and Wood debuts in November at CREED at 794 Madison Avenue in New York (1-877-CREED 44), at www.creedboutique.com, at Bergdorf Goodman and five Neiman Marcus locations to be visited by CREED’s seventh generation perfumer, Erwin CREED.  In Canada, Spice and Wood will be offered at five Holt Renfrew locations.  Other Holt and Neiman Marcus stores will offer Spice and Wood in January 2011.  Spice and Wood is offered in an 8.4 ounce collectors’ decanter (or flacon), $550.

Spice and Wood recalls the potent affection of Egyptian queen Cleopatra and Roman general Antony, a volatile romance played upon a backdrop of most exotic luxury.  Spice and Wood evokes the timbers of Cleopatra’s barge, a luxury watercraft where she and Antony reclined, drifting on the Nile, inhaling scent from blooms and spices they offered one another from their home countries.  The top note of Spice and Wood is bergamot from Italy, lemon from orchards of Egypt and aromatic Court Pendu Plat apples, a variety first grown in Rome.  The heart note is angelic root and Luxor roses with intriguing oil of cloves, a touch of desert peppers, heady patchouli and a hint of Italian birch.  The base note is Egyptian iris and cedar, oak moss and musk.

Like all Royal Exclusives, Spice and Wood is a statement about the artistry and heirloom quality of fragrance, bottling and collecting.  Presented in hand-blown Pochet glass etched with CREED’s famous crest, the fine fragrance is released with a gentle squeeze on a fabric pump, in perfumery’s classic tradition.  When not in use, the pump is easily removed and replaced with a multifaceted hand-cut glass stopper that turns bottle into sculpture.  For transport, the glass top is covered with white Italian leather, secured with a gold cord.

Diptyque EAU DUELLE
New fragrance

Diptyque has a new fragarnce out and watch for review in the next issue.
A few of us at the Magazine have sniffed this and it is gorgeous; perfect for fall!

From press release:

A narrow escapade between gentleness and character, femininity and virility, white vanilla and black frankincense. An enigmatic amber, woody oriental that will transport you away, orchestrated by Fabrice Pellegrin (Firmenich).  Eau Duelle is a vibrant dash of cold spices - cardamom, pink peppercorn and saffron - and the intoxicating juniper essence hits new heights with fresh cypress and elemi aromatic tinges. Then the vanilla emerges triumphant against the light and dark backdrop. On the one hand, there is ethereal, epicurean and powdery Firnat vanilla, its enthralling sweetness exalted by paradisone - a Firmenich captive molecule akin to an infinitely pure hedione - and by white, sweet and enveloping musks.
On the other, there is original and mysterious bourbon vanilla. It is slightly smoked and almost syrupy. Vetiver, African frankincense smoke, and animal and leathery twists from Asian cypriol purify it. A spice trail necessarily travels through places where unexpected exchanges occur. The gatecrashers here are black tea from Ceylon and the famous calamus reed, the tasty revealers that make the journey singular, memorable and priceless.

Tuberose
New Fragrance
Lissa Liggett Perfumes

I recently asked Lissa Liggett what her inspiration for creating a Tuberose fragrance that was described as an "intoxicating, intense floral perfume. Tuberose is paired with a kiss of Jasmine and Italian Blood Orange in a base of Organic Grape Alcohol" and she replied:

Being raised in Santa Barbara meant that Tuberose was a wonderful part of my childhood. As a little girl the heady scent of a single stalk filled my room every Saturday of every season. As a young woman I looked forward to Saturdays when I could walk thru Farmer's Market and pick out armfuls of locally grown Tuberose from the 5 gallon plastic buckets at The Domingo's stall.

By Suzanne Keller

After dithering for the past month and a half over whether
I wanted to purchase the Amouage scent for women, Epic,
or a bottle of Caron Tabac Blond extrait, the Tabac Blond
won out. The verdict from all the reviews is that it’s
stunning, which made the decision rather excruciating
since, as you know, I’m an Amouage fan girl. But having
gone through three decants of Tabac Blond over the past
two years, I decided it was about time I owned a for-real bottle.
Purchasing it turned out to be a great decision, firstly, because it’s my holy grail leather scent and, secondly,
because included with my purchase was a generous sample of the extrait concentration of Caron Tubéreuse.

Considering how supremely willful, unbending and diva-like tuberose is (and I say this as an enslaved lover of
tuberose), then kudos, big kudos, must be extended to Richard Fraysse, Caron’s in-house perfumer, for creating a unique take on the flower that sets his scent both apart from and on the same plane with perfumery’s greatest tuberose scents: Fracas, Tubéreuse Criminelle, and Carnal Flower. Fraysse’s 2003 creation is one in which all of tuberose’s sensuality and otherworldly beauty is on display, but its haughtiness has been reined in and confined, as if its spirit has been broken a little. Exquisite beauty made vulnerable, then placed on that distinctive Caron base...view full CONTAINED SENSUALITY review here

After all these years, the owners beautiful mother Christine still gently pulls out a select few, perfect blossoms from the bucket and offers them to me with a smile. My heart always beats a little faster as I begin choosing the large bunches that will fill every available vase in my house! The season is short lived for a Tuberose lover, only lasting from August to October at Domingo farms just north of Santa Barbara.  My quest for the perfect Tuberose Perfume began as a little girl. I would gather the blossoms and seal them into a mason jar with salt to put into my bath. I would try to preserve the Tuberose experience by tucking the precious blossoms into my clothes drawer which delighted me but it was a very short lived solution. A few years ago I began formulating what initially I hoped, would be a private supply of Tuberose perfume for myself. At about the same time, my dear friend Linda O'Hare was looking for a signature scent for her dreamy little store Lily, here in Montecito, CA on Coast Village Rd. I formulated batch after batch of what I hoped would be the perfect Tuberose, until finally after weeks of dreaming and formulating and sniffing and more sniffing I came up with my Tuberose EDP. Her tiny little store is now filled with the smell of the frequently sprayed perfume and I have a never ending supply of Lissa Liggett Tuberose for myself and my clients that are equally as crazy for that magic scent as I am!

I received a call the other day from my dear friend Juliet Stewart, the creator of the incomparably beautiful "Juliet" perfume. She was incredibly excited about a new clinic that she'd been to that was incredibly compassionate and holistic, yet possessed the most cutting edge diagnostic tools and treatment for breast cancer that she'd ever seen. In typical Juliet Stewart fashion she's become involved and is giving 10 percent of the proceeds from her lovely perfume "Juliet" to help with fundraising so that any and all women can have access to this groundbreaking and powerfully sympathetic technology. Read her own words and be amazed and please share them with anyone who you think would benefit for exploring this new technology...view full article here

Amouage
THE LIBRARY COLLECTION

The House of Amouage is delighted to announce the launch of The Library Collection, a trio of remarkable,
precious fragrances that celebrate integrity, originality and virtuosity.

Devised by the House’s Creative director, Christopher Chong, the three fragrances were inspired by the
recollections and fragments we each acquire on our journey; the fragments that collectively
represent a tome of memories. The name of the collection is drawn from the notion of the hidden
treasures in a library; a notion that kindles our desire to discover, to learn.

Collectively, the Library Collection is poetic homage to the art of living. Each fragrance has been
given a ‘code’, an Opus number, reflecting its status as a completed work within a greater collection.
The three fragrances defy categorization, transcend gender and allow the wearer to create their own
unique narrative. These are timeless classics, born of the age-old art of haute parfumerie.

OPUS I. A glorious Chypre fragrance, built around a warm, floral heart of Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine,
Rose, Lily of the Valley and Tuberose. Top notes of Bigarade, Plum and Cardamom add spice
and individuality, whilst woody base notes of Guaiac, Cedar and Sandalwood, along with Tonka
Bean, Vetiver and the House’s signature note of Frankincense provide an epic and bold losing chapter.
The narrative, olfactory evolution of this fragrance was inspired by the start of a pilgrimage in search of knowledge.

OPUS II. A majestic Fougère inspired by the heady and evocative fragrances of old books, dark wooden shelves and antique leather armchairs. Opus II opens with a rare and magical combination of Pepper, Pink Bay, Absinth and Lavender in the top notes. These notes unfurl to reveal a heart of Jasmine, Rose, Cinnamon and Cardamom. The base of Cedarwood, Amber, Frankincense and Patchouli conclude the fragrance with a soft, smoky, masculinity that contrast beautifully with the floral heart notes.

OPUS III was inspired by the art and science of the creative process, from the darkest moments of frustration, to the brightness of enlightenment and discovery. This radiant Floral Oriental fragrance is built around daring heart notes of Violet, Jasmine, Orange Blossom and Ylang-Ylang. These are introduced perfectly by top notes of Carnation, Broom, Mimosa, Nutmeg and Thyme. The vibrancy of the fragrance is anchored by earthy notes of Ambrette Seed, Papyrus, Benzoin, Frankincense and a trilogy of woods in the base.

Puro and Puro Intense
New Fragrances by Nejma Parfums

From press release:

Subtle plumes touch my soul with their gentle rhythm, Rising elusively into the air where their dance evaporates, Leaving in their graceful wake an ever-poignant memory.  On a recent stay in Havana, Christian Bousidan, co-creator of the Nejma perfume brand and great lover of cigars and rum, experienced a magical moment that transcended time; a moment so indefinable and unique that he wanted to share it with others, but could not find the words to do so…If words are not enough, fragrance must rise to the challenge. This unique feeling has been transformed into a perfume that takes us to another place, another time, like an epic novel Seated by the Malecón on the terrace of Havana’s Grand Hotel Nacional de Cuba, a Partagas Cigar in one hand and a glass of 7-year-old Matusalem in the other, listening to the sounds of Trova played on an old gramophone by the Buena Vista Social Club, a unique and magical moment was born and time stood still…Looking out to sea, you can almost see Hemingway in the distance on “El Pilar”, navigating the waters of the Gulf Stream, perhaps in search of his Old Man. Relaxing comfortably back into aged leather, gazing out this vast expanse of water, the scent of sea spray mingles with flowers and spices, demanding to be noticed.

If the cigar is Cuba’s perfume, old rum is its taste; a unique combination of sensual and ephemeral pleasure – almost an act of kindness. A magical moment, which, like Proust’s Madeleine, transports those fortunate enough to experience these pleasures to another time - to the Havana of a bygone era.  PURO The top notes are striking, evoking the freshness of a Mojito and the richness of aged Rum. Then comes the spicy bouquet of Cinnamon Bark and Clove Stem, with its sense of cosiness and familiarity. At the same time, the exotic and vibrant feel of the Caribbean is subtly brought to mind by a chord of Cactus.  Finally, the fragrance reveals it heart: a genuine Puro Cuban cigar enhanced with Mahogany and Vetiver. A sensory experience that will take you back to the intoxicating, dimly-lit cigar smoking salons of old Havana.  PURO is much more than a perfume.  It is a rare vintage.  The intensity of tobacco, the heat of rum, the freshness of the ocean and the exoticism of Havana infused with a dash of sensuality… The top notes are striking, evoking the freshness of a Mojito and the richness of aged Rum.
Top Notes : Pure Cuban Rum, Mexican Lime Essence and crushed Mint Leaf. Heart Notes : Cactus Sap with subtle notes of Prickly Pear and Cinnamon Bark. Base Notes : Cuban Cigar Leaves with Mahogany and Haitian Vetiver Root. PURO Intense: A distinctive fragrance with a genuine hint of aged Rum and energising notes of Caipirinha lime. Then, discover the aroma of Cocoa Bean and roast Coffee, creating that feeling of relaxed wellbeing so typical in hot countries with their slower pace of life. The dark, intense base notes of Mahogany and Tobacco Leaves will fill you with an intoxicating feeling of escape. Top Notes : Pure Cuban Rum, Mexican Lime Essence and Bitter Orange Essence. Heart Notes : Cinnamon Bark, pure Arabica Coffee and Cocoa Bean Extract.  Base Notes : Cuban Cigar Leaves with Mahogany and Burnt Caramel.  In the case of Puro, Christian Bousidan considered both perfumes to be on a par with the best vintage rum and cigars. The bottle and cap will therefore be  made from brushed aluminium to preserve this special nectar, which already promises to be a future grand cru.

Atelier Perfume
Grand Neroli Cologne Absolue Fragrance Review
by Beth Gehring Schreibman

When I was a child, we used to spend much of our time in the winter in Arizona where my grandparents lived.  It was Arizona before urban sprawl took over and so many of the roads in Phoenix and the surrounding Scottsdale area were lined with orange and grapefruit trees.

Every morning I’d wake up in a pretty little room in their house and the first thing that I’d do was throw open the window. It seemed that the fruit trees were always blooming at my grandmas house, at least that’s how I choose to remember it.  The scent was magnificent, completely out of control  and if I was lucky a warm breeze would blow , scattering  the loose petals all around. This drove my grandmother crazy, but my mother always prevailed, because I think that the fragrance delighted her totally.
I still crave those perfumes of my childhood and fortunately for me Atelier Perfume’s gorgeous Grand Neroli  evokes those memories  for  me in a way that no other Neroli perfume has been to do until now.

My mother would have adored  Atelier’s absolutely wonderful cologne absolue’, Atelier’s Grand Neroli; and everytime I smell it I wish that she was alive so that could give her the gift of some. It is romantic and spontaneous just as she was.  When I opened the generous bottle that I received as a sample,
I was immediately transported back to those days of  dreamily reclining on a raft in my grandmas swimming pool, which was set in ground beneath those exquisite trees and listening to my mother’s laughter and running commentary about the articles that she was enjoying reading from the pages of her beloved New Yorker.

Anyone who has spent anytime at all in the scorching Arizona sun understands just how important a copiously producing citrus tree can be.  Every afternoon I’d jump into the pool and float under the heavily loaded trees and simply reach up and grab a fresh  orange or grapefruit.  I’d peel it and eat it happily, completely oblivious to  anything else.  With fruits as sweet and fresh as these half of the joy is in the peeling of it. One simple  twist of  a sharpened blade and the fragrant oils from the skin spray all over you ,  refreshing and relaxing you  at the very same time with their essences both floral and fruity. Such is the first initial  blast of Grand Neroli, although the freshness is quickly replaced with a smoky sexiness that I attribute to the musky sweet amber and vanilla that transforms the brightness of the Neroli, Bergamot and Petitgrain into a slow caress on the skin.  One of the most pleasant aspects of this fragrance is that it becomes this quiet because it is a wonderful surprise for anyone lucky enough to have their lips resting on the nape of your neck.  I noticed it’s softness all day when I was wearing it and it became quiet and even smoother as the hours wore on.

That night when my husband Jim, came home, he buried his head in my hair and took a deep breath, smiled and asked me what I was wearing. His comment to me was that it was a fragrance that had become a part of own scent, instead of simply sitting on my skin the way that so many do.  I love this quality of Grand Neroli, that after the first refreshing breeze of citrus that it becomes so demure, simply refusing  to be  ignored. I am also told that a candle has arrived in these stores, a fabulous 50 hour creation that will scent your home beautifully for days. Grand Neroli  and the rest of the wonderful fragrances from Atelier Perfume are available at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman and awaiting your own personal story of  intimate discovery.

Congratulations to Bond No. 9!

Bond No. 9 is proud, thrilled, and psyched to announce that not one, but two of our eaux de parfum have just won the ultra-prestigious Fifi Award for Fragrance of the  Year (the year being 2009) in the coveted Nouveau Niche division. For Women’s Nouveau Niche, the winner is Bond No. 9 Astor Place. For Men’s Nouveau Niche, it’s Bond No. 9 Brooklyn.  Two prizes in the same category is a rarity in itself—and rarer still when the perfume house that created them is totally independent of larger corporate ownership.
We send our heartfelt thanks to all who have believed in, supported, and inspired our vision of New York-centric perfumery  over the seven years we’ve been in business. Not least, we thank our cherished customers, and most of all, we give praise to Miss Liberty,  lighting the way in New York Harbor.  (We also like that she's French ... but that's another story.)

After all, Bond No. 9 is a sensory re-imagining of the city of New York (including Brooklyn—the other boroughs are coming!, And not to forget the beach retreats that, after all, are Manhattan in summer exile.) What our precious Fifis really signal is this:   New York perfumery has come of age. At last we’ve got smell cachet.

Bond No. 9 Washington Square

For Bond No. 9’s high-spirited, holiday-time eau de parfum launch, the inspiration is Washington Square— that outspoken patch of greenery with built-in bocce courts, chess tables, Scrabble zone… and (not to forget) its own triumphal arch. The city park: by definition, a place to relax and unwind. But what happens when the neighborhood surrounding that park is already unwound? Then you get that elegant yet iconoclastic urban oasis known as Washington Square. Located at the base of Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village, surrounded by stately Greek Revival townhouses and NYU mega-buildings, Washington Square is a world class public space—frequented by students, professors, drifters, hipsters, chess players, guitar players, bocce players, moms with their kids in strollers, and a steady stream of visitors sauntering along the gently curving walkways that surround this park’s very own triumphal arch. Mark Twain came here. So did Charles Dickens, Pete Seeger, Stanley Kubrick, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, and (not least) Henry James, whose novel Washington Square has its setting here.....view full information here

Releases Two New Fragrances For Fall

Bond No. 9 zeroes in on that up-and-coming hotspot, Cooper Square, where the East Village meets NoHo, and the Bowery and the new über-Downtown begin. For this assertive new neighborhood, what else but an intense but contemporary eau de parfum?

For a century and a half, it’s modestly served as the front yard to Cooper Union, that world-famous architecture and engineering institution, and as a strategically located sliver of a park where traffic barreling down from uptown swerves and merges to form the start of uber-Downtown, otherwise known as the Bowery. But today, Cooper Square itself is in motion, zooming into the 21st century—and acquiring a new image as the latest New York hot-spot (worthy of the Bond No. 9 treatment, its own eau de parfum)....view full information here

L’Artisan Parfumeur Nuit de Tubéreuse:
Tuberose with a Brand New Spin

By Suzanne Keller

Though I’m not an ardent fan of L’Artisan Parfumeur’s sprawling line of fragrances, there are a few that manage to captivate me, and while visiting Cow Parfymeri in Stockholm recently, I found myself charmed by Nuit de Tubéreuse.

It charmed me in the sunny-but-cool temperature of a June day in Stockholm, and it is charming me further still in the 94-degree heatwave of these recent July days in Pennsylvania. As I sit in the muggy shade of my backyard writing this, I can almost swear I hear it humming “I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key,” while spinning figure eights around me. I get puffs of its effervescent scent whenever the air shifts enough to constitute a shallow breeze.

Nuit de Tubéreuse is a flirty fragrance with a fascinating set of wheels. Whereas tuberose so often conveys a thick and irresistible weightiness to perfumes—a sense of body, of flesh, of languor so sweet and slow-moving, it’s downright sinful—Nuit de Tubéreuse, on the other hand, has an impish sense of energy, thanks to the invigoration of spice and green-fruitiness that its creator, perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, strapped on. This is a lithe tuberose, as lithe as the tuberose note in another favorite L’Artisan scent (hmm, maybe I’m more of a fan of the line than I realized) — La Chasse aux Papillons—with the same sense of movement, but little of the bashful sweetness that is found in La Chasse.

Notes of cardamom, clove, citrus and green mango, in particular, conspire to produce a ginger-like accord that surrounds the flower. Before I looked up the actual fragrance notes, I had pegged Nuit de Tubéreuse as a gingery tuberose, and even now, knowing that ginger is NOT among the notes, it still strikes me that way. I think it’s
why I’m so entranced by this scent: gingery fragrances have the kind of zip that lifts my emotions and
seem incredibly energizing to me. And too, Nuit de Tubéreuse reminds me of a rare tincture I once had —
the gift of an herbalist—of “wild ginger”: a woodland plant found in old-growth forests in North America ,
so-named because its rhizomes, rather than its peculiar flower, mimic the smell of Asian ginger. I once
treasured that tincture for its earthy, zingy sparkle, and now I feel like I’ve found it again in Nuit de Tubéreuse.

Of course, the spice also adds a fine edge of sex appeal. A playful, teasing kind of sexiness—flirty
rather than vampish.  There is a translucency to Nuit de Tubéreuse that makes it perfect for daywear
and leads one to wonder how the fragrance got its name. I suppose the spice, enhanced by dusty notes
of black and pink pepper, could translate as dusky to some people—and tuberose is a night blooming plant,
after all. And again, there is a sense of fluttery movement to the fragrance not unlike the court-and-spark of
moth to flower…

“I rode my bicycle past your window last night,” it is singing in my ear now.  “I roller skated to your
door at daylight,” it reminds me softly but insistently.

Nuit de Tubéreuse might have wheels on its feet, but its will is as solid and unwavering as
all the other beautiful tuberoses that I know.  Nuit de Tubéreuse eau de parfum by L’Artisan Parfumeur
has notes of cardamom, clove, pink pepper,  black pepper, citrus, green mango, angelica, tuberose,
orange blossom, ylang-ylang, rose, broom, musks, vanilla, sandalwood, palisander, benzoin and styrax.
It is available from LuckyScent.com, $115 for 50 ml. I purchased my bottle from Cow Parfymeri in Stockholm.

Blue Gentian
Bergduft Fragrances / Fragrance Review

By Victoria Austin

Blauer Enzian – Literal Translation:  Blue Gentian.  My Translation:  Blue Bliss.

I’ve had an infatuation with sparkly blue stones for some time.  The way the blue facets glisten and gleam in the sunlight sending brilliant little sunbeams dancing around brings a blissful sparkle to my eye.  When I first tested Blauer Enzian, or Blue Gentian, I experienced the same blissful sparkle sensation.  Blue Gentian is a striking blue trumpet-shaped wildflower dotting the alpine iterrain, and the inspiration for Brigitte Witschi's latest edition to her wonderful line, Bergduft, or “Mountain” fragrances devoted to the magical wildflowers of Switzerland.

Blue Gentian opens with a slight zing of fruit and a fresh, airy note of a glistening mountain stream.  The opening is eventually surrounded by a soft, but verdant heart of mountain greenness highlighted by one of my favorites, osmanthus, and its warm scent of apricot.  Sandalwood composes the softly elegant woody base that grounds Blue Gentian in this seamless blend of fragrant elements.   A sheer, light, airy fragrance that embodies the pureness of sunlight, wildflowers and mountain streams is perfect for the warmth of summer.  Blue Gentian feels like a splash of cool, refreshing water from an alpine stream with wafts of wildflower scents floating over your pulse points.   Not at all heady or cloying, Blue Gentian, joyfully expresses itself quietly, but radiantly, in its soft lingering on your skin.

The top note is fruity and fresh like a mountain spring. Out of the heart note green elements emerge, which share the sweet companionship of osmanthus. As base note, subtle balsamic and powdery nuances coat the base of sandalwood.
In a fresh, rippling and light way this fragrance accompanies its user through the day bestowing her with a beguiling charisma.

Blue Gentian is available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum Spray from Bergduft at www.bergduft.ch along with the first two of Brigitte Witchi’s beautiful creations, Edelweiss and Alpine Rose.  www.bergduft.ch
